Papa Razzi first opened its doors downtown on Dartmouth Street in 1989. The sunken space below sidewalk level was dark but brimming with passion, promise, and hospitality. An inspired team, led by famed restaurateur Charles Sarkis, wanted to bring a new style of Italian cooking to the East Coast. At a time in America when Italian cuisine was synonymous with heavy marinara, Papa Razzi committed to cooking only with light sauces and fresh ingredients. Where other Italian eateries’ sauces simmered for hours before serving, here everything was made to order, just how the guest requested. Breads were baked in house daily, wood-fired ovens churned out rustic flavors, and each pasta dish was served to al dente perfection. Guests loved the fresh take on culinary favorites, and a New England institution was born.
Since then, Papa Razzi has grown to seven locations throughout eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It is poised for future growth and success with hospitality leader Newport Harbor at the helm. Newport Harbor is the proud owner and operator of the distinguished Newport Restaurant Group and Castle Hill Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property nationally celebrated by Condé Nast and Food & Wine magazines.
